Gems of Sri Lanka

Topaz Birthstone for NovemberTopaz is the birthstone for the month of November, comes from a Sanskrit word meaning “fire.” This gem, with its lively fire, clarity, beautiful colors and hardness is ideal for jewelry such as clips, necklaces, brooches and bracelets. Pure topaz, when brilliantly cut, can be often mistaken for a diamond. Because of its rarity, topaz is an expensive gem.

The most valued and rarest color is red. Imperial topaz – sherry colored varieties of brownish-yellow, orangish yellow and reddish brown – are the most popular topaz stones and command high prices, as do pink colored stones. Light blue and pale yellow topaz are of less value, but are nevertheless stunning in beauty.

opal1Opal is found in many varieties, but precious opal represents a remarkably small percentage of the total opal mined. Fine gem quality opal is more rare than rubies and emeralds. It is a more natural gem, and is a thing of beauty and obvious worth, even in its natural state.

A full range of colours swirls and flashes in the depths of a light opal. The background colour may be white or light blue. Light crystal opal is translucent and shows colours sharp and visible below the surface. When clear and colourless, this form is referred to as ‘water’ or ‘jelly’ opal.

Crystal opal refers to any kind of opal which is partially or fully transparent or translucent. However, there is a fine line between white opal and crystal opal. Sometimes there is only a mild or medium translucence which may lead to the opal being classified as either a white opal or a crystal opal, or even a “white crystal opal”

Blue sapphires have been mined since antiquity in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in the region of Ratnapura. Sapphires from this area tend to be light blue with a violet tinge. Fine blue sapphires are found in two regions of Thailand: the Chantaburi region, southeast of Bangkok and the Kanchanaburi region, west of Bangkok. These sapphires tend to be deep fine blue, with a blue green tinge.

The finest sapphires used to come from Kashmir, India in the Zaskar region. These deposits formerly yielded sapphires of a deep, cornflower blue. Most stones sold today as Kashmir sapphire come from Mogok, Burma. Deposits of sapphires are also found in Australia and Montana, USA. The Australian blue sapphires tend to be inky blue-green to nearly black with lighter blue colors having a green tint.

Montana sapphires, which have not been mined since the 1920s, tend to be pale or steel blue in color. Fine deep blue sapphires when properly cut can yield a gem stone both of deep blue color and fine brilliance. Most larger sapphires today are cut in round, oval, and cushion cut. However, they are available in almost all cutting forms.

12 Aquamarine

Aquamarine is a beryl with a hexagonal crystal structure and a chemical formula of Be3Al2Si6O18, a beryllium aluminium silicate mineral. It has a specific gravity of 2.68 to 2.74 and a Mohs hardness of from 7.5 to 8.

Some of the finest Aquamarine comes from Russia. The gem-gravel placer deposits of Sri Lanka contain aquamarine. Clear yellow beryl, such as occurs in Brazil, is sometimes called aquamarine chrysolite. When corundum presents the bluish tint of typical aquamarine, it is often termed Oriental aquamarine. In the United States, aquamarines can be found at the summit of Mt. Antero in the Sawatch Range in central Colorado.

In Brazil, there are mines in the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Bahia. Colombia, Zambia, Madagascar, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya also produce aquamarine. The biggest aquamarine ever mined was found at the city of Marambaia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1910. It weighed over 110 kg, and its dimensions were 48.5 cm long and 42 cm in diameter.

facetsAmethyst is the birthstone associated with February. It is also associated with the astrological signs of Pisces, Aries (especially the violet and purple variety), Aquarius, and Sagittarius. Its the official zodiac stone of pisces. People born in February on the 19th or later have amethyst as both their birth and zodiac stone. It is a symbol of heavenly understanding, and of the pioneer in thought and action on the philosophical, religious, spiritual, and material planes. Ranking members of the Roman Catholic Church traditionally wear rings set with a large amethyst as part of their office.

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used as an ornamental stone in jewelry. The name comes from the Ancient Greek a- ("not") and methustos ("intoxicated"), a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness; the ancient Greeks and Romans wore amethyst and made drinking vessels of it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication.
